Did you know that 52% of parents believe that parenting is harder today than it was 20 years ago because of technology? This is according to a survey done by Pew Research Center.
But what’s also funny is that 43% of parents believe that parenting is easier
today than it was 20 years ago because of technology.
What does this tell you? It means technology is not good or bad, but it depends
on how you respond to it or your perspective about it.
Many times we panic about some news we read online and make the wrong decision of informing our kids about it. Most times they don't take this well and sometimes even ignore our instructions, which leads to a lot of tension in the family. Why is this? Because we communicate from a place of fear.
Instead of communicating with your kids about technology from a place of fear, come from a place of understanding. Fear thrives on ignorance. So for instance, when you kid tells you about a new game they love or their favourite TV show, see that as an opportunity to connect with them. Instead of shooing them away, ask questions and try to be as open as possible. This way you can communicate with them from a place of understanding.
I'm not saying that setting rules is not good. In fact, we'll talk more about that in our next newsletter. What I'm saying is that when you communicate from a place of understanding, your kids a more likely to follow your instructions because they feel understood and they understand you want the best for them.
